Washington. According to President Donald Trump, no country will be spared from the planned reciprocal tariffs in the USA. "You would start with all countries," he said during a flight in the presidential aircraft Air Force One. "We would be talking about all countries."
The increasingly looming global trade conflict due to US tariff policy weighed on Asian stock markets at the start of the week. Japan's leading index, the Nikkei 225, recently fell by around 4 per cent. The Hang Seng Index of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region recently fell by 1.7 per cent and the CSI 300 Index of the most important Chinese mainland shares fell by around one per cent.
"Liberation Day" is imminent
Trump's economic adviser Kevin Hassett had previously told Fox Business that the US government would focus on the 10 to 15 countries with which the greatest trade imbalances exist. Trump wants to announce a large tariff package next Wednesday. He proclaimed the date "Liberation Day" for the United States.
Trump also recently announced additional tariffs of 25 per cent on all car imports for the day. According to a report by NBC on Sunday, Trump also threatened to impose punitive tariffs on buyers of Russian oil. These would amount to 25 per cent and could come at any time.
